Tata Steel Accelerates Expansion, Secures Iron Ore

Tata Steel's board has approved several major expansion plans as part of its long-term growth strategy in India.

The company will increase capacity at Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd by 4.8 million tonnes a year. This will help Tata Steel grow further in long products.

To support the automotive industry, it will set up a new 0.7 mtpa hot-rolling, pickling and galvanizing line at Tarapur in Maharashtra.

Another project will come up at Meeramandali, where Tata Steel plans to add a 2.5 mtpa thin-slab caster and rolling unit to boost its flat steel production. The company aims to reach a total capacity of 40 mtpa by 2030.

To secure raw materials, Tata Steel has signed an MoU with Lloyds Metals & Energy to explore iron ore mining in Maharashtra. It will also buy 50.01% of Thriveni Pellets Pvt. Ltd, which makes iron ore pellets used in steelmaking.

Together with Lloyds, Tata Steel will study the possibility of building a new 6 mtpa steel plant in two phases. The company already meets its entire iron ore requirement from its own mines.

The board has also approved a 1 mtpa demonstration plant in Jamshedpur. This plant will use lower-grade ore, avoid using coke, and recycle steel slag. Tata Steel will now begin engineering and regulatory work for this project.
