Hitachi Wins Major Transformer Order

Hitachi Energy India Ltd announced on Thursday that it has obtained an order from Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd to supply 30 units of 765 kilovolt (kV), 500 megavolt-ampere (MVA) single-phase transformers, as the nation increases its investments in its power transmission infrastructure.

In order to meet the growing demand from renewable energy sources, industrial electrification, and the switch to electric vehicles, India's energy planning is moving away from a project-based approach and toward a long-term programmatic strategy.

The company claims that over the previous two years, India's need for power transformers has increased at an average rate of 15% per year. The new machinery will be produced at Hitachi Energy's transformer plant in Gujarat's Maneja, Vadodara, in accordance with the government's Make in India manufacturing push.

Hitachi Energy's 765 kV transformers will enable efficient long-distance power transmission, enough to light up around 30 million Indian homes.

Higher voltage transmission cuts costs and boost grid reliability, helping growing electricity demand. The transformer will be delivered as per Power Grid's planned infrastructure expansion.

Hitachi Energy has successfully tested a world's first 765 kV transformer using biodegradable oil, enhancing safety and reducing environmental impact.
