The UK's FTSE 100 experienced a slight decline on Friday, primarily due to the drop in industrial metal mining stocks and the uptick in long-term bond yields, which deterred investors from riskier assets. The primary FTSE 100 index was down by 1.1%, and it appeared poised to record weekly losses of nearly 2.5%. This dip was influenced by the recent surge in the 10-year U.S. benchmark yield, which briefly touched 5%, thereby elevating borrowing costs on a global scale. In addition to these factors, industrial metal mining stocks faced a decline of 1.6% due to falling copper prices, largely attributed to the strengthening of the US dollar. However the continued climb in Gold prices driven by safe haven flows around Middle Eastern escalation risk saw Endeavour Mining take the top spot on the blue chip index gaining 3.8% on the session.

On the domestic data front, data revealed that British retail sales for September experienced a more significant decline than anticipated. This decrease was the result of consumers delaying their purchases of autumn clothing due to unseasonably warm weather and broader cost-of-living pressures. In response to this data, the British pound weakened against the U.S. dollar, reflecting the impact of the retail sales figures on the currency market.

On the negative side of the ledger Rentokil followed through on yesterday's dramatic declines after announcing a warning regarding North American growth concerns, the shares shed another 5.2% today sending it to the bottom of the FTSE again. In hot pursuit Anglo American also saw declines of 4.5% driven by weakness in copper prices.
