BYD Expects To Build More Competitive Blade Batteries

With the company's blade battery being used in more car models for the future, this production will increase BYD’s competitive advantage in domestic and international markets.

BYD blade battery launch

BYD recently announced during its conference call that along with the large-scale production of its iconic blade batteries and the work on improving its quality, the cost could also be continuously optimized.

For EVs (Electric Vehicle) with a cruise range of 500-600 kilometers, the battery’s energy density is becoming less important. However, BYD still needs to improve its battery's life span and safety, media reported. Moreover, due to surging raw material costs, BYD’s R&D teams will focus on the reduction of the battery cost.

BYD developed blade battery in 2020 and installed it on its flagship sedan Han EV. Compared with conventional lithium iron phosphate block batteries, the blade battery can raise the space utilization rate of the battery pack by over 50%.

In the nail penetration tests, a common way to test the performance and viability of cell batteries, BYD’s blade battery emitted neither smoke nor caught fire after being penetrated, and the surface temperature ranged between 30 and 60 degrees Celsius. However, under the same conditions, a ternary lithium battery’s temperature exceeded 500 degrees Celsius and burned.

The car battery market is intensively competitive, with BYD facing strong opponents from domestic and global markets. According to SNE Research, a market research firm, the top five car battery players in the world are CATL, LG Energy Solution, Panasonic, BYD, and SK On. Their market share in 2021 was around 32.6%, 20.3%, 12.2%, 8.8%, and 5.6%, respectively.
