Weekly ETF & Strategy Update

Major U.S. equity benchmarks continued to gain ground this week. The S&P 500 outperformed the Nasdaq-100, and several sector ETFs recorded strong gains. Meanwhile, a mix of U.S. and Chinese stocks posted exceptional 30-day returns.

Strategy Note
This was another strong week for the US market. For a change, however, the S&P 500 Index topped the Nasdaq-100 index in weekly price gain. The lowest cost ETF representing the S&P 500, SPLG outgained its Nasdaq-100 counterpart, QQQM by about 50% for the week with SPLG posting a 1.5% gain for the week and QQQM rising 1%. Large-cap stocks led the way again as the Schwab US MidCap ETF, SCHM, gained just 0.6% and the iShares S&P US Small Cap 600 ETF, IJR, gaining just 0.5%. As well as US stocks did, European Developed Market stocks still did better with the iShares MSCI EAFE Developed Markets ETF, EFA, gaining 2.2% for the week. Thus, EFA continued its year-to-date trend of outperformance, buoyed partially by a favorable exchange rate and partially by more global confidence amidst geopolitical controversy and confrontations. The iShares MSCI Emerging Markets ETF, EEM, did not keep up with developed markets but still gained about 0.8%. People who lightened up in the stock market in favor of Bitcoin and/or gold did not have as good a week. The iShares Bitcoin Trust, IBIT, lost 0.5% on the week while the lowest cost gold grantor trust using the ETF wrapper, iShares Gold Trust Micro-shares, lost 0.3%.
With the August 1 tariff deadlines coming up on Friday, traders in the capital markets are expected to focus a lot of attention there. That said, ValuEngine’s focus remains on its model-driven signals. Recent upgrades to group 5, strong buy, include: Ryder Systems (R); Disney (DIS); Vita Coco (COCO) and Edwards Life Sciences (EW).
