ESG ETF Index -7% In June, Now -13% YTD

ESG investing means that investments are made only in the businesses and their financial securities which are compliant with Environmental, Social, and Governance norms for doing their business and conducting operations and, of the 126 ETFs in the ESG category, 50 have been ranked as per their ESG Risk Ratings by Morningstar with 29 receiving ESG scores of 7.2 (AA or AAA) or more. Only 10 of those 29, however, are consistently head and shoulders above their peers in performance and they make up the constituents in the munKNEE ESG ETF Index.

Below is how the constituents in the index performed in June, in descending order, and YTD, along with their ESG scores:

  1. Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT): -2.6% in June; -11.3% YTD; ESG Score: 7.5
  2. S&P Health Care ETF (RYH): -5.8% in June; -16.3% YTD; ESG Score: 7.2
  3. Vanguard Value ETF (VTV): -8.5% in June; -9.9% YTD; ESG Score: 7.2
  4. Vanguard S&P 500 Value ETF (VOOV): -8.7% in June; -11.9% YTD; ESG Score: 7.4
  5. SPDR S&P 500 Value ETF (SPYV): -8.7% in June; -11.9% YTD; ESG Score: 7.5
  6. Invesco Russell Top 200 ETF (EQWL): -8.7% in June; -17.0% YTD; ESG Score: 7.5
  7. iShares Core U.S. Value ETF (IUSV): -8.8% in June; -12.0% YTD; ESG Score: 7.7
  8. Vanguard Russell 1000 Value ETF (VONV);  -9.3% in June; -13.5% YTD; ESG Score: 7.4
  9. JPMorgan Diversified Return ETF (JPUS): -9.5% in June; -13.4% YTD; ESG Score: 7.9
  10. JPMorgan U.S. Value Factor ETF (JVAL): -9.7% in June; -16.2% YTD; ESG Score: 8.4

The above 10 ESG ETFs were -6.9%, on average, in June and are now -13.3% YTD, on average, and have an average ESG score of 7.45.
