After a few days of volatility, the stock market rallied sharply Friday following Powell's Jackson Hole speech. What did the charts tell us as of Friday's close?
Powell acknowledged that economic risks have shifted—specifically, that the U.S. labor market is showing signs of weakening and that inflation, partly driven by tariffs, continues to be an upside risk. He emphasized that with policy still restrictive, "the baseline outlook and the shifting balance of risks may warrant adjusting our policy stance.
While Powell opened the door to an interest-rate cut as soon as the September Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, he carefully avoided making any firm pledge—stressing decisions will remain data-dependent and that policy isn’t on a preset path.
