Writing Tips That You Might Find Unexpected yet Useful

The topic of writing well will never get out of fashion. As in any other field, there are plenty of recommendations coming from all kinds of authorities. And while you definitely should follow all the guidelines introduced by your college or specifically the person who will be evaluating your paper, writing tips by bloggers and copywriters should be taken with a grain of salt. Particularly, these tips do not seem universal or valuable enough to be reiterated again and again.

Remove the passive voice. Your writing should be active

But… why? There are circumstances where you can’t possibly avoid using the passive voice. Besides, not all writing should attack the reader. How about serene descriptions of nature and landscapes? How about cases where the entire paragraph should be rewritten just to avoid this so vigorously hated grammatical construction? Common sense would tell you to use the passive voice where appropriate and not overdo it, and you should probably live by this rule.

Adverbs and adjectives

There is a distinct difference between phrases “left the room quickly” and “stormed out”. But what if you can’t just change the verb to add expressive power? Should you just drop the adverbs and adjectives that modify it and leave it there, lonely and feeble? Do your common sense and gut tell you to do so? If not, don’t.

Use short sentences

JUST short sentences, really? Have you read a 7-year-old’s letter to Santa? It’s full of short sentences. In fact, there are just short sentences there. Does it make it an example to follow?

There is a readability index that evaluates the text quite objectively, taking into account the length of sentences. The rule to follow to get a good result is to mix two short sentences and a long one, or use one short sentence in between the two long ones. It should be a healthy mix; otherwise, the reader will have a feeling that the writer doesn’t consider them very brilliant.

Have a structure beforehand

This rule doesn’t work equally well for all writers. Some do create a structure of the text before they start writing, but that’s just because it helps them organize their thoughts. If you are a more spontaneous writer, so be it. You can produce chunks of text and then edit and rearrange them to identify a structure. In fact, you can have no idea about the structure at all until you’ve started writing, and trying to develop it beforehand will only slow you down.

The way you write is individual – just as much as the tips you can find online. Try out a technique or two, but if it doesn’t work for you personally, don’t be afraid to forget about it. The result matters, the way you got there doesn’t.
