If left unmanaged, the irreparable damage climate change makes to the earth will eventually pass on to us by drastically affecting our nutrition. Globally, 821 million people live with chronic hunger and undernourishment, a huge portion of them living in environments that experience frequent climate shocks and other extreme weather events. What we are left with is a worldwide hunger epidemic exacerbated by climate change.
From hurricanes to droughts to wind storms, our land is taking a beating - including our farmland. Unfortunately, we are faced with the reality that our very own farming practices and standards that help keep most of the world fed contribute some of the highest levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Food production and consumption causes anywhere from 19%-29% of all GHG emissions, leading to rapid reinforcement of climate change, and diminished nutritional quality of the yield. When grown in high CO2 environments, staple crops like rice and wheat show lowered nutritional value in essential vitamins and minerals including protein, zinc, and iron.
Our changing climate and changing food has already put 29 million people in emergency-level food insecurity calling for humanitarian aid, a portion of which needed urgent and life-saving help. We need to make changes now to set the foundation for a sustainable and nutritious future.
