Why Meta Ran 11% Today

Meta surged 11% as a dispersion trade forced dealer hedging across the Magnificent Seven.

Brandon Chapman watched Meta (META) scream 11% on a day with no earnings. That move had nothing to do with an AI headline.

Desks were running a dispersion trade. They sold premium in the SPX and bought calls on the Mag Seven names.

Brandon showed the proof on the screen. The VIXEQ climbed from 38.3 to 38.8 while the VIX bled lower.

Component volatility rose because traders were buying calls on individual names. Index volatility fell because those same traders were selling SPX premium around 30 days out.

Those calls force dealers into negative gamma. Dealers hedge by buying stock, and the tape grinds higher on its own mechanics.

The structure was already loaded before the first tick. The market opened at 766 with the negative gamma flip sitting all the way down at 762.

That cushion let price run without friction. SPY blew through 770, took out 772, and touched 775 for a 1.5% session.

Yom Kippur thinned the field. A large contingent of the market’s biggest participants sat the day out, and the bears got run over.

Brandon isn’t calling this the start of a new leg. He compared it to August 3rd and 4th, when the gamma structure looked very different and a major level at 760 broke with a real vol of spot move behind it.

Here’s what he mapped out in tonight’s video:

  • Meta ran 11% on a non-earnings day while Intel (INTC) jumped 12%, NVIDIA (NVDA) added 2.3%, and the Mag Seven closed up 3.5%.

  • The VIXEQ pushed from 38.3 to 38.8 as the VIX slid lower. That split is the dispersion trade showing up in real time.

  • Tomorrow’s expiration already shows 100,000 contracts traded at the 775 strike against 22,000 on the put side. That wall sets the open.

  • 770 has to hold for the bulls. Brandon sees negative gamma creeping toward 769 and 770, which wipes out the $3 cushion that fueled today’s run.

The 775 level is the line in the sand. Opening north of it opens the door toward 780.

Losing 770 flips the regime and brings profit taking into the end of the week. Brandon walks through the exact strikes and the volume building at each one.
