What's A CDO And Does Your Company Need One?

A chief data officer could streamline your whole operation.

Think about all the data your industry generates in a single day. There is data about customer interactions, data about employee quality, and data about the quality of your product or service. All of this data is extremely valuable when used correctly. The only problem is that until very recently most companies just weren’t doing much with this data. Now there is a whole new seat in the C-suite dedicated to ensuring the greatest return on data analysis: the chief data officer or CDO.

A chief data officer’s job is to ensure that data is collected in a timely manner and that it is collected in such a way that comparisons and analyses are easier to make. Not only do they have to oversee the collection of the data, but they also need to oversee the careful analysis of the data and make suggestions as to any action that may need to be taken as a result of that analysis.

There are some challenges to the role of a CDO now that the GDPR has been enacted. Data belonging to EU citizens no matter where they live is subject to strict rules about privacy, and the CDO is going to be in charge of ensuring compliance in any collection and storage of EU citizen data.
