What Leopold’s Troubles Have Taught Us

Investors whose financial advisors have steered them towards concentrated AI stock holdings would be wise to consult an investment fraud attorney to review their portfolios.

All the talk on Wall Street this week was about the spectacular collapse of “Situational Awareness”, the $45 billion hedge fund run by 24 year old Wunderkind (German for Wonder Child) Leopold Aschenbrenner.

Leopold was considered an artificial intelligence (AI) guru who in a few short years developed a cult-like investment following.

Starting with a few hundred million dollars, he built a massive hedge fund betting on AI stocks using heavy margin, borrowing $4 for every dollar of capital.

His fund was concentrated in a mix of public (Sandisk, Coreweave, etc .) and private (Anthropic)  AI darlings.

When these high-fliers came back to earth this month, the fund received massive margin calls and was forced to liquidate the portfolio at severely distressed prices.

While tragic for young Leopold and his investors, there is a sobering lesson for all retail investors who have chased riches from investing in AI and data center stocks:

1. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket— diversify into many sectors.

2. Don’t use margin-- while margin can magnify gains it also magnifies losses and very abruptly.

3. AI, while promising great advances for society, is very risky.

4. Investing in private companies is very risky as these investments are illiquid and cannot be used to meet margin calls.

Investors whose financial advisors have steered them towards concentrated AI stock holdings would be wise to consult an investment fraud attorney to review their portfolios.

We can all thank Leopold for this important lesson.

Regards, Jake
