Around 80% of the top 1% of AI spenders are venture-backed, compared with 13% for the median across all firms. This suggests that the startups consuming the most computing power rely heavily on venture capital funding rather than internally generated earnings to finance their AI spending. Meanwhile, venture capital firms themselves receive funding from limited partners, investment funds, and major technology companies, including hyperscalers. This raises questions about the sustainability of AI spending and the potential for circular financing, where capital flows between interconnected investors and AI companies to fuel growth.
