Uber (UBER) has introduced Uber Works. A shift work matching app that hopes to efficiently connect workers with gigs that fit their schedules. The app is currently available in Chicago.

Autonomous vehicles (AVs) are about to dramatically change the world of on-demand car services. Viewed through that lens, Uber and Lyft’s (LYFTcurrent business models are doomed to fail. So, a pivot for ride-sharing services has been in the works for quite a while. However, Uber Works is not a pivot, it’s a test.

According to the Uber Works site, the app offers shift work “From food preparation and commercial cleaning to events and retail positions, add shifts that match your skills and interests.”

The key benefit for workers, “Submit your hours after your shift, and rest easy knowing that you’ll get paid in a timely manner.”

I like this idea. Love it, actually. That said, is Uber going to win the hearts and minds of shift workers and the trust of businesses with staffing needs? Let’s keep an eye on the Windy City and see.
