Recent research shows that employees in UK companies would appreciate working at a company that is environmentally sound and which provides them with greener benefits. Benefits have long been an accepted part of an employment package that aims to attract and retain the best staff. Now people are becoming more aware of environmental issues, benefits are set to become greener and more sustainable and balanced.
A recent survey asked 1,000 people whether it was important that their company was environmentally responsible and 69 percent said yes. Half of all those surveyed said they wished their employers would do more to be greener and more sustainable. Over one third of those who responded said that they thought receiving greener benefits would result in them feeling more loyal to their company.
Here are some of the most popular green benefits offered (and requested by) UK companies and employees.
1. Green Cars
Company cars may be a traditional benefit to working at a company but increasing numbers of people are asking for greener cars – environmentally friendly models, cars that guzzle less gas, and smaller cars that are more efficient to run.

2. Sustainable Electricity in the Office
Many people want to work in an office where the power comes from sustainable sources, according to Commercial People. Many employees are aware of the difficulties attached to traditional sources of energy and it would be a bonus for them if they could work in a clean energy environment.
3. Discounts on Green Things
Other green benefits include discounts on recycled products, environmentally friendly products, and product that help you live a greener lifestyle.
4. Discounts on Public Transport
One of the most popular benefits for employees in central London is big discounts on public transport – this is a green benefit but also a practical one, since it is hard to get around in London by car. And it is a bonus for employees who live further out of central London, since property prices are so high in the capital - the average price of a house in London is £675,305, which is much higher than the national average, according to government statistics.
5. Bike Hire and Purchase
Other people want to be able to buy bikes with a season ticket loan, or use work bikes to get around in their lunch hour or to and from work. A variety of companies offer green bike schemes and the chance of buying a cheaper bike in instalments.
6. Paid Volunteering
Other green and ethical benefits include paying staff to take time out and work in a voluntary capacity near to their office or to their home. The Body Shop is one company to offer this perk.
