These 15 Marijuana ETFs Declined 2.8% On Average In December

Here's a list of the ETFs with their performances in December and for the latest 6 month period.

The December performance of the market's 15 marijuana/marijuana-related ETFs was down 2.8% on average from the previous month and ranged from -7.6% to +0.12% depending on the makeup of their constituents. Below is a list of the ETFs with their performances in December and for the latest 6 month period.

The 15 ETFs (see details of each here) consist of two US-centric ETFs (HMUS; USMJ), two leveraged ETFs (HMJU; HMJI), two marijuana/ancillary plays (ACT; MJ) and 9 more broadly based ETFs. In addition, seven of the 15 ETFs are passively managed and 8 are actively managed.

The ETFs (excluding the leveraged ETFs) experienced, on average:

  • a decline of 2.8% in December following on the heels of 
  • a decline of 7.3% in November, 
  • a decline of 8.4% in October, 
  • a decline of 13.3% in September, 
  • a decline of 11.9% in August and 
  • a decline of 48% since the marijuana market peak realized last March.

  7. Purpose Marijuana Opportunities ETF (MJJ): -2.4%; (-36.2%)
  8. Horizons US Marijuana Index ETF (HMUS): - 2.4%; (-42.1%)
  9. Global X Marijuana ETF (POTX): - 2.3%; (N/A)
  10. Cambria Marijuana Industry ETF (TOKE): -2.1%; (-39.0%)
  11. ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ): -1.0%; (-45.3%)
  12. Evolve U.S. Marijuana ETF (USMJ): +0.12%; (-40.6%)

The Advisor Shares VICE ETF (ACT) was the best performing non-leveraged marijuana/marijuana-related ETF again this month given its 30 diversified holdings (see here) in select alcohol companies (24.0%), alcohol companies with cannabis exposure (7.6%), tobacco companies (8.2%), tobacco companies with cannabis exposure (13.7%), restaurant & entertainment companies (16.1%) and cannabis companies (30.3%).
