The top 1% of Americans now hold a record share of total U.S. net worth, approaching 32%. In dollar terms, that represents more than $50 trillion concentrated among a relatively small segment of the population. Historically, this share tends to decline during periods of economic stress. As seen in 2000 and 2008, recessions and stock market downturns significantly reduce the wealth held by the top 1%, underscoring how closely their net worth is tied to financial market performance.
