This is a famous story from Hindu mythology. It is about kindness, honesty, and giving. It is also the reason why people in Kerala celebrate the Onam festival every year.
Who Was King Mahabali?
Long ago, there was a demon king named Mahabali. His grandfather was Prahalada, a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Mahabali was a good and kind king. He ruled his kingdom well, and his people were happy. But the gods (Devas) were not happy. Mahabali had become too powerful, and the gods felt weak under him. So they prayed to Lord Vishnu for help.
A Big Yagna and a Small Boy
Mahabali decided to do a great yagna (a holy ceremony). During this yagna, he promised to give anything to anyone who asked. Many people came and asked for gifts, and he gave them everything.
Then a small boy came. His name was Vamana. He was actually Lord Vishnu, but he looked like a simple young boy. Mahabali felt very happy when he saw the boy. He said, "Ask me for anything, little one. I will give it to you."
Mahabali's teacher, Sukracharya, knew that this boy was really Lord Vishnu. He warned Mahabali not to give him anything. But Mahabali had already promised, and he did not break his promise.
Vamana's Small Request
Vamana asked for something very small. Just three steps of land. Mahabali laughed and agreed easily. He thought, "This boy is so small, how much land can his feet even cover?"
To make the gift official, Mahabali had to pour water from a small pot onto Vamana's hands. But Sukracharya turned into a tiny insect and blocked the pot so the water could not come out. Vamana noticed this. He took a sharp piece of grass and poked the insect, and Sukracharya lost sight in one eye. After that, the water flowed, and the gift became official.
Vamana Becomes Huge
As soon as the gift was given, little Vamana grew bigger and bigger, until he became a giant who filled the whole sky. With his first step, he covered the entire earth. With his second step, he covered the sky. Then he asked Mahabali, "Where should I put my third step?"
Mahabali had nothing left to give. So he bowed down and offered his own head for the third step. This showed how honest and generous Mahabali truly was.
Mahabali's Wish and the Festival of Onam
Vamana was touched by Mahabali's kindness. He made Mahabali the king of the underworld (Patala). Mahabali then asked for one small wish to visit his people on earth once every year, just to see if they were happy. Vamana agreed to this wish.
This is why, every year, the people of Kerala celebrate Onam. They believe King Mahabali comes back to visit his land on this day. People make beautiful flower designs, cook a big feast, and hold boat races to welcome him home. The festival reminds everyone about kindness, honesty, and the value of keeping your promises.
