The Legend of Uchchi Ganapathy
According to Hindu mythology, after the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, Vibhishana, the righteous brother of Ravana, received the sacred idol of Lord Ranganatha as a gift from Lord Rama. He was instructed not to place the idol on the ground until he reached Sri Lanka.
As Vibhishana traveled through Tiruchirappalli, he wished to perform his daily prayers. At that moment, Lord Ganesha appeared in the form of a young boy. Vibhishana requested the boy to hold the idol temporarily with a strict instruction not to place it on the ground.
After waiting for some time, the young boy called out to Vibhishana three times. Receiving no response, he gently placed the idol on the ground. When Vibhishana returned, he found that the idol had become firmly rooted and could not be moved. Realizing he had been tricked, he chased the young boy up the massive rock hill.
When Vibhishana finally reached the top, the boy revealed His true form as Lord Ganesha. Understanding that everything had happened according to divine will, Vibhishana surrendered to Lord Ganesha and sought His blessings. The place where Lord Ganesha revealed Himself became the sacred Uchchi Ganapathy Temple, while the Lord Ranganatha idol remained at Srirangam, one of the most revered Vaishnavite temples in India.
