The Semiconductor Selloff May Be About To Accelerate

Markets signal a shift from mega-cap tech as semiconductor stocks face rising credit risks.

Markets were fairly boring again today, with little happening on the surface but plenty happening beneath. The RSP outperformed the SPY, pushing the SPY-to-RSP ratio lower. This suggests market leadership is shifting away from the mega-cap technology stocks that have driven much of the market’s gains toward a broader group of stocks. If this trend continues, the equal-weighted S&P 500 could outperform the tech-heavy SPY.

TradingView chart of SPY/RSP daily ratio rising from 3.20 to peak near 3.70 with cyclical swings, now 3.56, down 0.81%, with RSI oscillating between 30 and 80

The SMH remains at a critical level, with support around $540 having held firm for some time. A break below that level could trigger a sharper decline and open the door to a retest of the July lows near $510.

Daily chart of VanEck Semiconductor ETF (NASDAQ) showing price rising from about 360 in Nov 2025 to a peak near 680 in mid-2026, then pulling back to close at 546.36, down 0.38%, with RSI at 35.19 indicating weakening momentum

That makes sense, given that credit default swap spreads continue to widen for semiconductor companies, with Nvidia (NVDA), AMD (AMD), and Broadcom (AVGO) widening further today. Typically, widening CDS spreads signal rising credit risk, which tends to put downward pressure on stock prices. That relationship has largely played out for Broadcom, but less so for AMD and Nvidia, although both stocks have recently started to weaken as well.

Line chart of 5Y CDS mid spreads for Broadcom, AMD, and NVIDIA from Nov 2025 to Oct 2026, all around 35-40 bps initially, rising sharply after June 2026, with Broadcom reaching about 155 bps, NVIDIA about 100 bps, and AMD about 108 bps by Oct 20, 2026

The 2-year Treasury yield appeared to be forming a bull flag ahead of the CPI report and briefly broke out before giving back the entire move. Now, the pattern appears to be taking shape again. This time, any breakout would need to hold. If it does, I think we could see the 2-year yield rise to 5% or higher.

Daily chart of US Government 2 YR Bond Yield rising from about 3.7% to 4.78%, with trend channels and RSI at 55.83

Maybe tomorrow will be interesting.
