The Push for More Energy: Keeping Up with Power Demand in the US

Power demand is increasing in the United States, and the energy system will need upgrades to keep up. Focusing on alternative energy and more efficient infrastructure will be vital in the coming decades. 

 

In 2050, energy demand will have increased by 50% in the US, requiring at least 5,178 terawatt hours of energy.  Part of the reason for this spike in demand is the increased reliance on AI.  A single AI server request uses 8 watt-hours of energy, which is about 23-30x the amount of a normal Google search.  

 

Unfortunately, the United States has an aging power grid.  70% of transmission lines are nearing the end of their lifespan, which increases their susceptibility to power outages and cyber attacks.  Replacing the electrical grid would be time-consuming and expensive, costing around $5 trillion to complete.

 

In order to overcome these challenges and meet energy demand, the United States is focusing on alternative energy sources, such as nuclear power.  Speeding up interconnection queues and purchasing equipment from US-based employers will also make the energy system more efficient and productive. 

 

Energy is critical to the functioning of society, and the United States will need to increase its production to keep up with booming demand.
