S&P 500 earnings growth has historically been highly cyclical, with significant fluctuations depending on the economic environment. The early 1990s, the early 2000s, and the 2008 financial crisis all experienced periods of negative earnings growth. Since 2022, however, the S&P 500 has delivered positive earnings growth each year. Looking ahead, if artificial intelligence and new technologies continue to reduce operating costs, companies could see further improvements in profitability.
