Brandon Chapman traced today’s entire session back to one number. The SPY opened at 744.91. That price sat directly on the call wall.
745 held 11,500 calls in open interest against 2,000 puts. The market opened at its ceiling. It never pushed through.
One strike lower, the structure flipped. 740 carried 10,000 puts against 7,900 calls. Negative gamma took over from there.
Negative gamma forces dealers to sell into weakness. The selling fed on itself once 740 gave way.
Brandon called the downside level during his TheoTRADE session this morning. He told the room to watch 736.
Price bottomed at 736.50. The next low printed 736.27. The one after that printed 736.
That level held. The tape pinned around 740 into the close.
Here is the part that matters for the rest of the week. Friday’s expiration carries 64,000 puts at 740. The call side shows nothing close to it.
The gamma range widened to 30 points. Recent weeks ran 20 to 25.
Brandon walks through the full map in tonight’s video:
The upside wall sits at 755, which lines up with resistance on the daily chart. Getting there takes strong Mag Seven earnings and a dovish Fed.
The downside level sits at 725. A break there opens a chasm of volatility, with 23,000, 34,000, and 49,000 puts stacked below.
Positive gamma is starting to build just above 740. Brandon wants those levels checked before the open, because one day to expiration carries far more gamma punch than Friday.
Nvidia (NVDA) dropped 5% as the dispersion trade reversed. Traders sold calls and bought puts, pulling the ratio to 0.6 from 0.75 earlier in the session.
Gold outperformed the S&P 500 broadly while staples led the board. XLK, XLU, and XLE all got dragged lower.
Oil sold off hard and finished at its lows. That failed to lift the S&P 500, which faded from its own highs.
Brandon’s best case for the week runs through a weaker dollar. A dovish Fed opens the door for gold and silver to surge. Gold could lead the whole market higher.
A hawkish Fed flips the script. The market sees more downside. Gold sells off with it.
Risk cuts both ways this week. Price has to break into positive gamma territory before the market gets any real lift.
