The IPO Warning Signal Investors Shouldn't Ignore

Surging IPO activity from SpaceX and OpenAI mirrors patterns seen before the dot-com bubble and 2008 crisis.

SpaceX (SPCX) was the largest IPO in history, with other high-profile offerings from companies like OpenAI and Anthropic likely to follow later this year and into next year. While a healthy IPO market reflects strong investor confidence, history suggests that surging IPO activity has often preceded periods of heightened market volatility. During the dot-com bubble, annual IPOs exceeded 400 before the market peaked in 2000. Similarly, IPO activity averaged roughly 150–170 per year in the four years leading up to the 2008 financial crisis. With equity markets at record highs and the IPO pipeline accelerating, investors may be witnessing a familiar pattern from past market cycles.
