FTSE Trades Mixed as Weak PMI Data Offsets Oil Recovery
U.K. stocks turned in a mixed performance on Wednesday morning, as weak domestic flash PMI data weighed on investor sentiment while recovering crude oil prices kept the broader market on a cautious footing. HSBC turned more constructive on UK equities, lifting its year-end FTSE 100 target to 11,390 from 10,980 — a call that points to roughly 6.5% upside from current levels.
Selective buying across financial, energy, and speciality engineering blue-chips provided crucial support against broader market inertia. Precision engineering specialist Renishaw led industrial gains, rallying nearly 4% following record annual results. Pest control group Rentokil Initial (RTO) climbed 2.7%, while steady buying interest lifted London Stock Exchange Group (LSEG), Standard Chartered, Lion Finance, Burberry Group, BP (BP), Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG), Polar Capital Technology Trust, 3i Group, RELX, SSE, and HSBC Holdings by 0.7% to 1.5%.
Conversely, consumer discretionary, automotive, and selective defensive heavyweights faced selling pressure into the afternoon session. AutoTrader Group and JD Sports Fashion bottomed the top flight, dropping 3.4% and 3.3%, respectively. Widespread losses ranging between 1.0% and 2.0% weighed on Melrose Industries, St. James's Place, IG Group Holdings, Barratt Redrow, Vodafone Group (VOD), Spirax Group, AstraZeneca (AZN), United Utilities, Tesco, and GSK (GSK).
On the economic front, preliminary survey data from S&P Global (SPGI) pointed to a slight loss of momentum across the British economy. The UK Flash Composite PMI eased to 51.7 in September from 52.5 in August, coming in slightly under consensus expectations of 52.0. Despite the dip, the print marked a third consecutive month of expansion in British private-sector activity following back-to-back contractions in May triggered by regional Middle East energy price surges. Breakdown data showed the Services PMI slowing to 51.7 from 52.5 in August, while the Manufacturing PMI score softened to 51.4 from 52.1.
Finish Line: U.K. equities struggled to build decisive upside momentum as a cooling private-sector PMI expansion and recovering crude oil prices offset corporate earnings strength at Renishaw. While financial and energy heavyweights provided a steadying hand, pressure on consumer and defensive names kept the FTSE 100 consolidating in a narrow range.
