The Chicago Business Barometer is a leading economic indicator that measures activity across both the manufacturing and non-manufacturing sectors in the Chicago region. A reading above 50 indicates economic expansion, while a reading below 50 signals contraction. In February, the index rose to 57.7, comfortably above the 50 threshold and pointing to potential economic expansion. After reaching a recent low in November 2025, the indicator has gradually trended higher, suggesting improving business conditions in the months since.
