Workday underscores the vital role of hard stop-loss orders in protecting capital during sudden price spikes.

I always have stop-loss orders for my short positions. This is a great example of why: I was short Workday (WDAY).

In the midst of the trading day, word got out that WDAY was a takeover target. I got stopped out where the red arrow is, taking a small loss on the position. You can see what happened next. “Mental stops” are a joke. In my opinion, you should use actual stops with your broker.
