Shares of T-Mobile briefly spiked in afternoon trading after news that Sprint's majority owner SoftBank is still eyeing a combination of the two wireless carriers.

Shares of T-Mobile (TMUS) briefly spiked in afternoon trading after news that Sprint's (S) majority owner SoftBank (SFTBF) is still eyeing a combination of the two wireless carriers.

DEAL HOPES: Bloomberg reported Wednesday afternoon that Masayoshi Son, CEO of SoftBank and current Sprint chairman, is still holding out hope for a deal with T-Mobile. Son could "try again" based on who becomes the next FCC chief, added Bloomberg.

CONFERENCE CALL: The report of Son's merger hopes follows an announcement this morning by T-Mobile that it will hold a conference call on August 18 at 6:30 am PT. The press release does not specify the purpose of the call.

PRICE ACTION: Shares of Sprint, which were trading near $5.90 at the time of Bloomberg's report, briefly spiked above $6 before settling lower. T-Mobile saw similar activity, spiking to nearly $47 before pulling back.
