Sprint has entered into preliminary talks to merge with T-Mobile, Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

Sprint (S) has entered into preliminary talks to merge with T-Mobile (TMUS), Bloomberg reports, citing people familiar with the matter.

According to the people, Sprint and SoftBank (SFTBF), Sprint's largest shareholders, have had "informal" conversations with T-Mobile owner Deutsche Telekom (DTEGY) about a deal. Also this week, SoftBank Chairman Masayoshi Son and Deutsche Telekom CEO Tim Hoettges told investors separately they'd be open to consolidation talks.
