Five major companies known as FAAMG (Facebook, Amason, Apple, Microsoft, and Google) earned a combined revenue of 68% of the US GDP growth in 2018. This staggering number has caused many to question the influence this allows only a few companies to hold. The result has been a call to break up big tech companies.
This past March Elizabeth Warren started an ad campaign that urged the break up of big tech but this campaign ended up being removed by Facebook. Warren responded to this by saying "Curious why I think FB has too much power? Let's start with their ability to shut down a debate over whether FB has too much power." This has not been the only instance of big tech censoring free speech. Tulsi Gabbard had ad campaigns pulled from Google which resulted in her suing Google under alleged violation of free speech.
As more control is gained by only a few companies that may censor and take down information they disagree with or feel hurts their name the world is losing their trust in receiving accurate uncensored information. Today two-thirds of Americans are in support of breaking up big tech. But what will happen next is still unknown.
