Comcast's (CMCSA) "The Secret Life of Pets" topped the U.S. box office for a second consecutive week, earning $50.6M against predictions of $53M-$54M and continuing the strength shown by animated features in 2016.
BOX OFFICE RUNNERS-UP: Sony's (SNE) "Ghostbusters" debuted at $46M during the July 17 weekend against a $46M-$57M forecast. The Melissa McCarthy-led reboot of the 1984 classic received a B+ in audience polls from CinemaScore, holds a 73% approval rating on reviews aggregator RottenTomatoes, and was produced with a reported budget of $144M.
Meanwhile, Time Warner's (TWX) "The Legend of Tarzan" grossed $11.1M in its third week. Disney's (DIS) "Finding Dory" added $11M in its fifth week for a cumulative domestic total of $445.5M, setting a new all-time U.S. record for animated films.
Rounding out the top five, Fox's (FOX) "Mike And Dave Need Wedding Dates" took $7.5M. Other publicly traded companies in filmmaking include Viacom (VIA) and Lionsgate (LGF).
