Today Rxi Pharmaceuticals (RXII) announced that it will present new data at the 2016 ARVO Conference. ARVO stands for Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the presentation by Rxi will take place on May 1, 2016 as noted by the press release:
"On Sunday, May 1, 2016, new data from ongoing research utilizing the Company's proprietary RNAi platform in the area of therapeutic topical delivery to the eye, will be presented in the 3:15 – 5:00 p.m. PDT poster session: Corneal Wound Repair and Healing. These data may be viewed on Poster 1280 - D0228 entitled, "sd-rxRNA®: Self-Delivering RNAi Compounds Show Potential for Corneal Indications Following Topical Application."
As noted above new data will be presented about the company's work with a corneal scarring drug. This is an important drug for the company because it targets an unmet medical need. To prevent damage to the eye, doctors can prescribe antibiotics, or steroid eye drops to reduce inflammation. This is done to avoid corneal scarring from occurring.
Some treatments for corneal scarring involve using a laser in an attempt to remove some of the scars from the Cornea, even though they may grow back slightly and interfere with vision. Another current treatment option is to do a corneal donor transplant, whereby the patient receives an entirely new cornea for the eye by having surgery performed on them. These options either may not work as well, or cause so much trouble.
Rxi is attempting to provide a topical gel whereby the patient can apply topical gel to the cornea, where the scar is, and be able to reduce scars. This is intended to reduce vision loss/blindness. Rxi is able to accomplish this because their current skin scar drug RXI-109, currently in hypertrophic phase 2 scar trials, can be turned into soluble form. This means the company has made the compound into a topical compound that can be applied directly onto the cornea.
