The S&P 500 Real Estate sector rallied 2.36% on Friday, its best day since April 9, 2025, and the strongest performance of any sector. Despite having its best day in more than a year, Real Estate has led the index on just six of 140 trading days this year, tied with Financials and Industrials for the fewest. Its record looks considerably better from the other end of the rankings, though. Real Estate has been the worst-performing sector only five times, fewer than any other sector. Energy has led on 34 days and finished last on 22, while Communication Services has posted 18 first-place finishes and 15 last-place finishes. Real Estate is the only other sector with more best days than worst days. That relative consistency has helped it gain 14.9% YTD, outpacing the S&P 500 and ranking fourth among the eleven sectors.

With Friday’s rally, Real Estate is now 3.25 standard deviations above its 50-DMA, its most overbought reading since February 17. Even then, the sector wasn’t the most overbought sector in the index, as Utilities traded 3.58 standard deviations above its 50-DMA. The chart below shows every day over the last five years when Real Estate was simultaneously the day’s best-performing and most overbought sector. Friday marked just the fourteenth occurrence.

A one-year view makes the sector’s recent strength even clearer. Real Estate has reached a fresh 52-week high and is trading at its most overbought level in more than five months. Not bad when interest rates are near their highs of the year!
