Prior to the chaotic Trump presidency, the GOP functioned as a thinly disguised death cult that successfully flew below the national radar. It accomplished this because the death and destruction of its policies were responsible for could not easily be laid directly on its front door. However, the elected Republican officials continued support of Trump's negligence, incompetence, and malfeasance, especially concerning covid-19 has exposed the cult exactly for what it is, a death cult. Most troubling is the fact that in spite of this, the Republican Party performed as well as it did while its leader, Trump, was soundly defeated by Biden.
Let's explore the reasons why I consider the Republican Party the death cult:
- We lose more than 40,000 American lives each year as a result of gun violence and/or suicide by gun. The GOP, in concert with the NRA, has passed or prevented legislation meant to curb and reduce access to guns, most notably assault rifles that should never be allowed in the hands of private citizens. The GOP proclaims that the Democrats want to eliminate our 2nd Amendment rights, knowing that has never been the case. Sane gun regulation seeks to prevent guns from being placed in the hands of criminals, the mentally impaired, and other individuals judged unfit to hold them.
- While Republicans laud deregulation, much of what is deregulated negatively affects the health and welfare of Americans. Clean air and water appear no longer to be a national priority. Under the Republican governor Snyder, the Flint water fiasco was, not only allowed to happen, it was kept hidden in spite of the fact the state administration was well aware of its dangers.
- For years, the GOP, beholden to our fossil-fuel community, has denied climate change, and whenever possible refused even to acknowledge it. Florida Senator Scott, when our governor, refused to allow its discussion by his subordinates. How many lives will be lost because of the devastating wildfires in the West, made worse by said global warming? This is coupled with extreme flooding resulting from rising seas and heavier than usual downpours, especially during increasingly severe and numerous hurricanes we are rapidly becoming accustomed to.
- The Republican Party, for years, has fought against adequate healthcare and insurance for all Americans, most transparently displayed by its resistance to the ACA, aka Obamacare. How many lives does that cost us per annum?
- The GOP has historically fought against raising the national minimum wage, which now barely allows an individual to survive, much less a family of four. How many more lives are threatened?
Now during the Trump administration, even those who rarely pay attention, are able to see the true face of this death cult.
- The GOP stood quietly by while the Trump administration tore migrant children away from their parents and still holds most of them in cages as if they were animals in a kennel.
- Alt-right thugs such as the Proud Boys and neo-Nazis marched through Charleston chanting: "Jews will not replace us" and other hate-filled slogans, Trump referred to them as fine people as GOP officials stood silently by, even after one of them rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing a young woman.
- Trump, the self-acknowledged climate change denier, has hastened the negative effects it's having on our ever-warming planet, yet the GOP quietly stands by.
- Now that covid-19 has already cost us more than 1/4 million American lives, the GOP still stands by idly. Worse yet, with Biden the apparent winner and President-elect, this same GOP says little while Trump refuses to acknowledge his defeat and continues to withhold transitional access to government funds, offices, information vital to our nation's security, and most notably to grant permission that will assure a smooth and rapid transition for Biden's healthcare team necessary to fight the virus that is killing so many and, in the process, destroying our economy. And still, the GOP stands idly by.
- And the CARES act passed by the lower house in May, which would have helped struggling families and local governments out of the tight spot they find themselves in, Mitch McConnell and his supporting cast of Senate Republicans have not allowed it to move forward and pass. Suddenly, they appear to have become financially conservative and only offered a paltry $500 billion rather than the necessary $2.2 trillion that the bill called for. Yet these same skinflints readily passed the 2017 tax bill give-a-way, which mostly benefited the super-wealthy and cash-heavy corporations that had little need of the government largesse. How many more lives will this current obstruction cost?
Sadly, this death cult not only squanders the lives of its followers who stubbornly cling to their belief that covid-19 is simply a hoax, thereby refusing to wear masks and socially distance themselves from their fellow citizens, but it also endangers all of us and places all our lives at risk. Wake up, America, removing Trump from office was a good start; now let's complete the job and flip control of the Senate to the Democrats who will help Biden do the job of defeating the virus and rescuing our economy, rather than a Republican-controlled Senate that will only act to obstruct him.
