Product Configurator: the Ultimate Personalization for eCommerce

A look at how personalization is the ultimate gift to the consumer experience

According to Segment, a full 71% of consumers are frustrated at some level with their impersonal shopping experience. The question is - do you think that customization on a mass scale is possible?  Personalization is not a new debate when it comes to product rollout on internet and e-commerce, and it's one worth working on as it leads to customer loyalty and providing a superior customer experience.

There are four main approaches of how to handle personalization through customization:

  1. Adaptive customization: This uses a standardized product designed to accommodate many uses. An example is Phillips light bulbs- customers can adjust color, brightness, change how lights are controlled, and program schedules.
  2. Transparent customization: This is where manufacturers adjust using customer data.  An example is in the beauty, hair, and skin products industry, which are formulated for each customer, but with the same packaging.
  3. Cosmetic customization: A classic example of this is Nike, selecting a standard style and size of shoe, but can customize colors and finishes.
  4. Collaborative customization: The most advanced way this is done.  An example is Sheffer Cylinder Configurator, where customers work directly with engineering.

Product configurator is the technology that allows the realization of the dream of personalization and customization - right down to the individual.
