Preparing For College With Gateway Courses

A look at how gateway courses are paving the way for student success

Did you know that two-thirds of community college students are labeled academically underprepared in math and/or English? Many students are not given the support that they need in order to succeed once they enter college and that can affect whether or not they continue their education.

 

Gateway courses are the first college- level course a student takes in a certain subject. If students are given the opportunity to take these courses, they gain more skills and  feel more prepared for more difficult material. Even low performing high school students are more likely to succeed when placed in these entry level courses. Once students complete these courses, the chances they graduate community college on time increases by over 20%
