Every intelligent investor needs to keep a close eye on dividends and should be including them in their portfolio. The stock markets may have gone down this first quarter of 2014, but dividends did far better. 1078 companies increased their dividends payments to their shareholders in the first 3 months of this year, the greatest number since 1979. These increases were significant as well - the average increase was 23% above what it was a year ago.
