Welcome to another edition of Options Update, a monthly article series in which I summarize options trades and keep track of DivGro's options income.
My options activity has quieted down significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic struck, and May was no exception. It is not that there are fewer opportunities; rather, I've been working from home and consumed with other activities that have kept me away from my usual routine. We'll see how it goes in the next month or so!
I've dug myself into a hole and it remains highly unlikely that I will achieve my 2020 goal of collecting at least $24,000 in options income.

Assigned Options
When the holder of an option exercises the option, it is said to be assigned.
I had no assignments in May.
Expired Options
In May, the following option expired:

Simon Property Group (SPG) traded above $51 on options expiration day, well above the $40 strike price of the put I'd sold. So the option expired and I secured $559 in options income.
Union Pacific (UNP) traded above $150 on options expiration day, about $5 above the $145 strike price of the put I'd sold. So the option expired and I secured $535 in options income.
The $55 puts I'd sold on Gilead Sciences (GILD) also expired, as the stock traded above $75 per share on options expiration day. As a result, I secured $161 in options income.
Finally, Abbot Labs (ABT) traded above $89 on options expiration day, so the $75 put I'd sold on ABT expired and I secured $116 in options income as a result.
I all, these expiring options secured options income totaling $1,371.
Closed Options
When an out of the money option goes further out of the money, you can close the option early and secure most of the options income.
In May, I didn't close any options early.
Rolled Options
Rolling forward options means buying back an option and selling another option with a later expiration date. You can do this to avoid options assignment for in the money options or to collect more options income for out of the money options.
I did not roll forward any options in May.
Covered Calls
Selling covered calls is a way to collect extra income on stocks you already own.
I didn't sell any covered calls in May.
For covered calls, I think an achievable goal is to earn double the dividend yield.
New Put Contracts
Selling put options allows me to set the price I'm willing to pay for a stock I want to buy. In effect, I get paid while waiting for the share price to drop!

I'm willing to buy 300 shares of Comcast (CMCSA) for $35.00 per share on or before 17 July. CMCSA closed at $39.55 per share on the date of my trade:

This put option trade yields 1.25%, or 9.10% on an annualized basis. At $39.55 per share, CMCSA yields 2.33%, so I'm boosting dividend income by a factor of 3.91. If the options are exercised, I'll buy 300 shares at a cost basis of $34.49 per share, a discount of 12.79%.
For selling puts, I like to see a dividend boost factor of 5.00 or more unless I can buy shares at a discount of at least 10%. While close, this put trade does not quite match that trading goal.
Options Income Tally
Here is a running tally of the total amount received from options trades, as well as the options premiums secured due to options that expired or are closed. Secured means I no longer have related obligations and "own" the corresponding options income free and clear.

So far this year, I've lost $2,682 in options income. Given my goal to collect $24,000 in options income in 2020, I'll now have to earn $26,682 in the remaining seven months to achieve my options income goal!
It is highly unlikely that I would be able to average $3,812 of options income per month to reach that goal!

My options activity has quieted down significantly since the Covid-19 pandemic struck, and May was no exception. It is not that there are fewer opportunities; rather, I've been working from home and consumed with other activities that have kept me away from my usual routine. We'll see how it goes in the next month or so!
I've dug myself into a hole and it remains highly unlikely that I will achieve my 2020 goal of collecting at least $24,000 in options income.
