Instances of domestic violence have been on the rise over the past few years as the stress of the pandemic, and subsequent inflation and joblessness have produced an unusual amount of stress in day to day life.
Additional stressors tend to trigger bouts of abuse even more, and currently more than 243 women and girls experience domestic abuse every single year.
Perhaps the most devastating part of domestic violence statistics are the number of instances that go unreported and the number of times victims go without necessary medical attention. In fact, well over half of all abuse victims never receive medical care.
Some of the reasons why victims don’t report abuse and don’t receive care are the pressures they can feel from their family or social circles, their dependence upon their abuser, and the damaging psychological effects of abuse. Many feel powerless to change their circumstances.
This is why it’s vital for friends, family, co-workers, and others to be aware of the signs of abuse and to be ready to offer help to victims.
