Shares of Oculus Innovative Sciences (OCLS) are up 10% after announcing a new patent for its Microcyn Technology for patients with atopic dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis is also known by the name of eczema, and is a skin disease. In eczema a patient's skin becomes inflamed, causing redness and itching.
Eczema is commonly found in children, but it can appear on adults as well. Treatments range from oral medications and light therapy, to topical steroids. The first two, oral medications and light therapy, are not very effective. Topical steroids may have to be taken intermittently for many years, since with continuous use they can lose their effectiveness after a few weeks, known as tachyphylaxis.
The new patent awarded today to Oculus for the Microcyn technology hydrochlorous acide in eczema will last till the year 2027. The United States is currently the largest market for treatments for this skin disease, but it affects the entire global market. Many analysts believe that the eczema market could potentially reach $582 million by the year 2016. It's estimated that physicians current write 12.5 million prescriptions for topical steroids for eczema patients each year.
The Microcyn technology hypochlorous acide is created from dilute saltwater. The company gets hypochlorous acid and hypochlorite -- sodium salt -- from the diluted saltwater. Microcyn gel is said to be safe and effective treatment for patients needing wound therapy as well and those with eczema.
