The Dow, S&P 500, and Nasdaq finished Friday with daily and weekly losses, and all three would have logged monthly declines as well if not for the Dow eking out an October win. The blue-chip index snapped its three-week winning streak as a slew of lackluster post-earnings reaction weighed all week.
The Nasdaq, meanwhile, logged its steepest daily decline since June 5, pushing the tech-heavy index to its worst monthly loss since March 2025. The Russell 2000 Index (RUT) managed a second-straight weekly win despite today's selloff, though the small cap index still finished lower for the month.
A continued rotation out of AI stocks sparked today's selloff, with earnings reports from Amazon.com (AMZN) and Intel (INTC) adding pressure. In response, Wall Street's "fear gauge," the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX), surged to its highest level since April today, securing its biggest monthly gain since March.

Crude Rises for the 4th Straight Month
December-dated West Texas Intermediate (WTI) futures rose 2.3% to $104.36, after an attack on a tanker in the Strait of Hormuz signaled renewed energy infrastructure concerns. Black gold finished the month up roughly 15%, for its fourth consecutive monthly gain.
Gold prices dropped for a second-straight month, falling to 52-week lows today. December-dated gold futures fell 2.8% to $3,919.60 per ounce, while spot gold marked its lowest level since October 2025.
