Pharmaceutical and consumer products giant Johnson & Johnson announced it was temporarily halting its COVID-19 vaccine trial after a participant developed an unexplained illness.

Global stock markets fell on the news as this is now the second time a coronavirus vaccine front-runner has paused a trial.

Concerns are mounting that the 'race' for a vaccine has compromised safety and due diligence standards. Trial processes which usually take years to complete are being compressed into just a few months as companies race to be the first provider of a COVID-19 vaccine. It was only last month that AstraZeneca (AZN) temporarily stopped its coronavirus vaccine trial after a participant fell ill.

Currently, there are still a variety of different trials taking place all over the world. They include:

Pfizer
Moderna
AstraZeneca

These are all in late-stage trials. Pfizer has already stated they could have something as soon as this month. This may mitigate any weakness the stock market presents on any obstacles towards a vaccine.
