By Timothy D. Naegele[1]
Lots of us believed that Musk was a hero for having rescued our astronauts, whose planned eight days in space turned into a harrowing nine months. The female astronaut's health was especially precarious.[2]
When Musk came to Washington, D.C. (at times with his delightful son X), and launched DOGE, we were excited. It seemed like another step forward for Musk and the country. Yes, government does not work, and is grossly inefficient and wasteful[3]; and Musk exposed this.
Next, President Donald Trump and his administration have championed the "One Big Beautiful Bill," legislation that has been winding its way through the Congress.[4] Having worked in and with the U.S. Senate for decades, I am very familiar with "Christmas tree" legislation, which traditionally has been enacted before Congress adjourned for its Christmas recess.
Every competent lobbyist has something in the final legislation to satisfy his or her clients. This is how Congress works. Legislation is messy, and the process is unruly; and anyone who thinks otherwise is very naive. Musk attacked the legislation; and apparently he has been upset that Trump would not appoint a favorite of his as head of the space agency NASA, who is a rabid Democrat.
To criticize the legislation and differ with the appointment are understandable. But Musk went farther and attacked the President personally, in scathing terms. While he has attempted to walk back his accusations, it appears to be "too little to late."
Vice President JD Vance has called Musk "insane," which may be shorthand for his decades of drug use, and children from many women.[5] More importantly, the government contracts that Musk's entities have might be terminated; and as a South African, he may be deported and denied reentry to the USA.
Trump was not elected as our President multiple times, and he has not survived assassination attempts, by being a "softy." He is tough as nails. And Musk may learn this the hard way.[6] One thing is crystal clear: Trump should never trust Musk again. He's a druggie.
