On Monday Inovio Pharmaceuticals (INO) and subsidiary Gene One life sciences received authorization to begin the first ever trial in humans for the Zika Virus. This trial will be a phase 1 clinical trial utilizing Inovio's Zika vaccine candidate, known as GLS-5700. Pre-clinical results have shown positive T-cell responses against the virus in both small and large animals.
Now, the company will have to see if this will translate to positive results in humans. As long as the vaccine can show that it can protect humans from infection the trial will be a success. The phase 1 study is a dose finding study in which 40 healthy patients will be recruited to see if the GLS-5700 vaccine is safe and effective.
The Zika virus is a disease that needs to be taken care of, and Inovio's vaccine may be the one. The virus has spread to 58 countries and is causing a host of medical conditions in patients. The good news is that investors won't have to wait too long as the company expects to report the phase 1 data before the end of the year.
