An illustrator hands over an inked crest. Slightly wobbly outline, strokes that swell and thin, one antler heavier than the other. It's lovely, and it's lovely because of all of that.
It comes back from the embroidery digitizing services provider and it's fine. Even outline, tidy curves, both antlers matching. Technically better and completely dead. Here's how that happens and how to stop it.
The Standard Advice Works Against You Here
Open any guide to preparing artwork for embroidery and it says the same things. Consistent line weight. Clean, unbroken lines. Confident strokes. Simplify.
That's sound advice for a corporate logo and it's exactly what destroys a hand-drawn one. A digitizer's training pushes toward regularity, because regularity is what makes a file sew predictably. Left unchecked, that instinct sands off every quality that made someone commission the illustration in the first place.
So the job isn't to stop the digitizer being careful. It's to tell them which irregularities are the point.
Work Out What the Character Actually Is
Before anything else, look at the drawing and name what makes it feel handmade. It's usually two or three specific things.
Common ones: line weight that varies along a single stroke, ends that taper to a point rather than stopping square, curves that aren't quite symmetrical, visible texture from the pen or brush, and elements that overlap rather than butting neatly together.
Some of those survive thread easily. Some can't survive at all. Knowing which is which before you order stops you being disappointed by a limitation nobody could have avoided.
Variable Line Weight Is the One That Matters Most
If you only preserve one thing, preserve this. A brush or nib stroke that swells in the middle and thins at the ends carries most of the handmade feeling on its own.
It's also achievable. Satin columns don't have to be a fixed width. Digitizing software supports variable-width strokes, sometimes called power strokes, where the column widens and narrows along its length exactly as the drawn line does. There are taper tools that bring the start and end of a stroke down to a point instead of a blunt cap.

One Line Might Need Three Stitch Types
Here's where hand-drawn work gets genuinely awkward. A single stroke might run from half a millimeter at the tip to four millimeters at its thickest.
No one stitch type covers that range. Below about a millimeter you're into running stitch territory, a bean stitch adds weight without width, and satin only starts working properly around one and a half millimeters. So one drawn line can legitimately need two or three treatments blended along its length.
That's normal for this kind of work and it's part of why illustration digitizing costs more than a logo of the same size. It isn't padding, it's the number of decisions per inch.
Texture Is Lines, not Fill
Cross-hatching, stippling and sketch shading are drawing techniques, and the temptation is to convert them into a fill of the equivalent darkness.
Don't. A fill turns hatching into a flat gray shape and the drawing loses its hand entirely. Hatching should be stitched as actual lines, following the direction the artist drew them, even though that's slower and uses more color stops.
There's a size floor on this. Below a certain scale the hatch lines merge into a solid anyway, and at that point you may as well fill it. Which is an argument for making the design bigger, not for giving up on the texture.
Scan It Properly, Then Resist Cleaning It
Scan rather than photograph, at 300 dpi or higher, flat and square with good contrast between ink and paper.
Then be careful what you remove. Dust specks, scanner noise, stray pencil guides and smudges from your hand should go. The wobble in the outline, the uneven weight, the slightly off-center element and the visible stroke ends should stay.
The problem is that a digitizer looking at your scan can't reliably tell a deliberate quirk from a scanning artifact. That ambiguity is where character quietly disappears, and it's entirely fixable with one sentence of instruction.
Tell the Digitizer What's Deliberate
This is the single most useful thing you can do, and almost nobody does it.
Send a short note with the artwork saying what must be preserved and what can be tidied. The line weight varies on purpose. The left side is meant to sit slightly lower. The rough ends on the strokes are the whole point. Keep the hatching as lines.
Without that, a conscientious digitizer will assume the irregularities are errors and correct them, and they'll think they've done you a favor. Reputable embroidery digitizing services would much rather have the instruction than guess at it.
Give It Room, and Judge It on Fabric
Hand-drawn work needs more size than a clean logo does, because the character lives in the fine variation and fine variation needs space to exist.
A crest that reads beautifully at four inches can lose everything distinctive at two, where every line converges on the same minimum width. If the illustration matters, argue for the larger placement before you argue about anything else.
Then approve from a physical sew-out, never a simulation, because thread texture either flatters this kind of work or flattens it and you can't tell which on screen.
