How the Pandemic Changed How We Eat Breakfast

A look at how the global pandemic changed breakfast - hopefully for the better.

Working from home changed the way breakfast is done - and hopefully for the better and for good. Last year, 85% of people changed their eating and food preparation habits due to COVID. In fact, Americans cooking at home nearly doubled over the last year - from 37% in 2019 up to 60% in 2020. Breakfast is often looked at a great part of the day to crave comfort food.  During the pandemic, common breakfast item consumption grew significantly in pancakes (25%), waffles (20%), sausage (16%), bacon (15%), and cereal (11%).

A positive habit that has been emerging since the pandemic is that people who haven’t been rushing out to a long commute aren’t skipping breakfast. While half of Americans think that breakfast is the most time-consuming meal to make, that’s where heat-and-eat refrigerated breakfast items are filling a need.
