When you think of ways that people can steal from you, chances are you think about credit card fraud, identity theft, viruses, phishing, phone scams, and the like.  One area that you might be surprised to learn is a new way that unfortunately has been robbing many people of their home and the equity that they have built up over time.  In fact, from 2015 to 2019, real estate and rental fraud grew at 2.6 x the rate of credit card fraud!

How does home title fraud happen? 

  • Forged deeds are created using easily accessible online data
  • Scammers file paperwork with the county claiming ownership of your home
  •  The true homeowner is unaware of the scam until they get a letter from the letter indicating they are being foreclosed on.
