Google announced its wireless carrier offering called Project Fi yesterday. (It's pronounced Fi like in WiFi by the way). You can request an invite here. I think Fi is brilliant for one main reason...Android updates. Let me explain...Probably the biggest flaw in the Android ecosystem is version fragmentation. Although it's improved the last two years, it still has ways to go before approaching iOS like figures. The problem is that the OS update process is so difficult that most OEMs just build new phones instead of updating old ones. However, things could be different with Fi phones simply because Google owns the entire experience. It makes the phone, the software, and controls the carrier signal. With end-to-end control, Google could push out Android updates at will, perhaps every 2 weeks like Xiaomi does. Perhaps Google Fi is just Android Silver in disguise.
Project Fi is for Nexus 6 owners only, at first and is built on top of Sprint and T-Mobile’s networks. A coverage map is below:
