Recently, I listened to a Christian minister deliver an articulate speech about how Israel is God's creation, and God would never abandon it. However; there was one caveat: if Israel "lost its way," all bets were off.
Jews are often spoken of as "God's Chosen people"[2], citing the Old Testament of the Christian Bible. It was written by various authors over a period of centuries.[3]
The number of Jews in the world is infinitesimally small, numbering approximately 16 million, or 0.2 percent of the world's population. Approximately 7.4 million live in Israel, and an equal number reside in the United States.[4]
There are approximately 4,200 "religions, churches, denominations, religious bodies, faith groups, tribes, cultures, movements, or ultimate concerns" in the world[5]. And American Jews are Americans.[6]
Years ago, I experienced God as Infinite Intelligence; and I have never doubted that God exists ever since.[7] It is my belief that the religions of the world are man-made attempts to understand God (or our higher power). Christianity and Judaism are merely part of that quest.
Thus, when the minister gave his speech, he was part of the quest. Is Israel doomed?[8] Time will tell.[9] Why write about these issues? Because it is my belief that God is central to our lives. Our time here passes in the wink of an eye, and then we return to our Creator, so I believe.
