Last year, parents faced a reckoning with their children’s screen time as a result of the pandemic. In 2019, adolescents spent 3.8 hours behind a screen per day. In 2020, that figure more than doubled to 7.7 hours, largely thanks to the addition of remote schooling. While these measures were necessary to mitigate the spread of disease, they left children of all ages with a host of negative side effects.
One of the worst is accidental exposure to pornographic content. The average child first sees pornography at age 11, usually unintentionally. Early exposure can have long term consequences like lower self esteem, normalization of unsafe sexual behavior, and increased odds of teen pregnancy.
What can parents do to make screen time safer for their kids? Parental controls are good things to install, but they aren’t the end of it. Talk to your kids honestly about safe technology use.
